about

Michael Hathaway's debut album, Awakening, is a refreshingly innovative take on kirtan music. The mantras, which range from the familiar to the slightly more obscure, are hypnotically sung with a yearning of sincere devotion. Harmonically woven within a colorful, eclectic swirl of mesmerizing instrumentation, they create soulful, lush soundscapes that range from dreamy to fiercely intense. The apparent blend of widely varied musical influences including Indian classical, psychedelic rock, indie rock, pop, jazz, and even gospel create a fusion that honors the tradition while expressing a unique, deeply personal offering.
